Mystery Pink Ooze on Isolated Tasmanian Beach Spurs Fears of Potential Phytoplankton Proliferation
Agencies in the island state are attempting to pinpoint a rosy sludge that has appeared on a isolated coast, with a number of researchers worried it could be an algae outbreak.
Widespread Presence Across Beaches

"You usually see a proliferation of sea sparkle after a proliferation of another organism, or for example a salmon or coral spawning event," she said.
Demands for Response and Community Health
A marine scientist, who gathered specimens of the magenta ooze in Tasmania, stated it seemed the potential proliferation had "increased notably" and suggested the fish farming business was the most likely culprit, referring to similar cases elsewhere.
"Thus the state needs to send a firm alert here, the government and the environmental agency need to respond to this. We need to examine the examples we've gathered and we need to inform the community here," she said.
She expressed she had concerns for community health after feeling a prickling feeling along her body while being sprayed with affected seawater.
Reports of Dead Sea Creatures and Demands for Government Action
An environmental foundation has reported dead octopus and deceased marine life appearing on the coast, with a longtime environmental campaigner describing the situation as an "natural disaster" and urging the state premier to inspect and "take control the reaction that officials must be undertaking".
