Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.

Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a statement.

Law enforcement state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.

The substance had been drawn in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.

Law enforcement then located many other marked cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.

Officials report preliminary tests indicate the liquid was probably human blood.

"There is still no clue as to its origin; investigators are not yet cognizant of any harm in association with the occurrence," they stated.

Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to unravel the incident" and have asked to the community for details.

A senior representative commented the incident rendered him without words and required to be solved quickly.

"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the far-right violent incident in 2020," he wrote on online, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at people of migrant background in five years prior.
